All miniatures are pretty great, but some are greater than others. I really can’t start talking about my favorite minis without starting where it all began… Britains The classic toy soldiers are absolutely where my love for these little people started. A local specialty toy retailer stocked Britains and my brother and I spent lifetimes drooling over the catalogs and peering through the display cabinet glass.  Debating about which figure to get.  Cowboys?  Soldiers?  Knights?  Space aliens???? Sadly, Britains have been gone for a while.  But I still have most if not all of them.  I’m pretty sure some mounted knights were lost to the ravages of childhood play.  As much as that pains me a bit, that’s what they were designed to do.  To be loved and potentially lost. These were the days that I pined for “Indian in the Cupboard” to be a true story. Playmobil The next…

Advanced Heroquest – The Maze As brutal as ever. Barbarian died twice, wizard died once before we ran away!

Depending on your perspective, we’re either spoiled, or deprived. I know I’ve written about this before, but here we are again. This is more of a comparison to the release of other GW dungeon crawls. We’ve been spoiled for past ten years. GW released five major dungeon crawls in that time. Though… we had all those games in the first seven years, and none since. The Timeline Note: I’m starting with Heroquest and I’m not counting Space Hulk since there isn’t a roleplay aspect to it. Nor am I counting video games or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, since I don’t play either. So there! I’m also not counting Warhammer Quest: Lost Relics because it’s not a big box release. I’m counting the card game since it effectively relaunched the WHQ franchise. We’re approaching the time gap between Advanced Heroquest and Warhammer Quest. We’ve already blown past Blackstone Fortress to Cursed City.…

The author’s experience is starkly different than mine as a young person with a copy of AHQ in hand. https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/pauls-most-important-gaming-memory/ I’m glad someone enjoyed their experience with AHQ, because my experience was a letdown after the wonders of HeroQuest. My brother and I were ready to take on AHQ after playing dozens of rounds of HeroQuest. But the box contents were… underwhelming. Warhammer Quest 1995 remedied that situation, though at an out-of-reach price tag. So! As an adult I figured I’d give AHQ another try. And, it was pretty much the game I remember. Lots of emptiness ending in abrupt death. In stark contrast to HeroQuest, where you’re slaying monsters all day, if you run into a monster in Advanced HeroQuest, they will quickly and quietly stab you to death in the darkness of a long forgotten hallway. Your character will spend their last moments counting how many arrows remain…
