My Favorite Minis
All miniatures are pretty great, but some are greater than others. I really can’t start talking about my favorite minis without starting where it all began… Britains The classic toy soldiers are absolutely where my love for these little people started. A local specialty toy retailer stocked Britains and my brother and I spent lifetimes drooling over the catalogs and peering through the display cabinet glass. Debating about which figure to get. Cowboys? Soldiers? Knights? Space aliens???? Sadly, Britains have been gone for a while. But I still have most if not all of them. I’m pretty sure some mounted knights were lost to the ravages of childhood play. As much as that pains me a bit, that’s what they were designed to do. To be loved and potentially lost. These were the days that I pined for “Indian in the Cupboard” to be a true story. Playmobil The next…
OMG WHQ!!

Projects: Finished and otherwise
I have some projects that I’d really like to get knocked out A Note to Readers: I started this post months (years?) ago. And happily, I’ve finished some things on it already! The List That’s the stuff I had on my list from the ancient and dusty past. A book of hobby grudges, perhaps. I have new grudges too! My current priorities include Darkwater, a whole stack of Citadel wizards, and a Halfling Blitz Bowl team. I missed the timeliness-deadline on the Cursed City Christmas scenario again, but maybe… next year. Which is now this year… I’ll get around to it. Now, if I can pick up a paintbrush and actually start working I can make some progress.
What’s on the Table?!
Warhammer Quest 1995 We played yet ANOTHER abbreviated Little Monk adventure, available here: https://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/t393 Castle of Darkness! I talked about this last year, but didn’t quite make it on the table. Here’s the minis that we used. It was a lot of fun. I think we did nearly everything right this time.
Give Us a Generous Game
The Ghosts of Games Past come to visit us on this cold December day. I’m writing this in the liminal time between when Darkwater has been announced, but not yet available. To me, Pre-orders are in the future. Youtubers don’t even have reviews out yet. Which seems… a bit odd. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I want Games Workshop to give us a generous game. A game that is more than just one thing. A system. A lush setting full of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. I want a GM-less RPG that satisfies! So here’s a look at generous games of the past. Space Marine (Epic) Three armies. Terrain. Markers. Counters. Rules. Reference Sheets. So Good. Man O’ War Fleets! Counters! Great art! Cards! Mordheim I’ve never played, but there’s a city in this box! It’s still a super popular system. Necromunda Another one I haven’t played, it’s…
Warhammer Quest Day (2025)
Today is Warhammer Quest Day, in a way. Pre-orders for Warhammer Quest: Darkwater go live today at 1:00 pm EST. I’m looking forward to the game system that I care most about getting some coverage. I, and the whole world, expect the game to sell well. Despite a price tag that rivals an eBay copy of Warhammer Quest 1995. I’m hoping for a good, fun game, despite some obvious cutbacks. The board-book is unproven (for WHQ), the new character and activation system looks “a bit clockwork” as a youtuber described it. Removing unnecessary grind from the game is a good thing. Cursed City was bloated with grind out of the box. Luckily that is easy to skirt, just play the missions that you want, based on your level. We’ll see. Fingers crossed. Word on the street is that there are no special incentives to pre-order. No limited edition foil character…
Did Tariffs Kill Games Workshop Bookshelf Games?
This is speculation, but I’m guessing that tariffs and other economic chicanery killed GW bookshelf games this year. 2025 has been slim pickings at B&N. We’ve definitely had more the last few years than this year. Dawn of War: Onslaught came out this year, but that’s it. By my count, at least 14 games 2019-2024. Only one in 2025. So here’s a summary of some of the most interesting boxed (bookshelf) games released by Games Workshop. I’m not even counting “mainline” games like Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, or Underworlds starter sets. Combat Arena In previous years, we had three versions of Combat Arena: Warhammer Quest: Lost Relics This is a bookshelf stand-alone Warhammer Quest game. I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear is a puzzle/optimization type game, rather than a true dungeon crawler. Blitz Bowl We’ve had three editions of Blitz Bowl, plus all the team expansions from…

Warhammer Quest Expansions: The Retrospective
Wow, there’s really a lot out there for all these games. The most common thing I read online about this stuff is that there isn’t enough. But wow, there’s really a ton. Even Cursed City, that seemed to get the short-straw of support really has a lot of content. Here’s every White Dwarf with Cursed City content: It’s 2025 and we’re not quite half way through Nightwars. People also complain that they want but can’t get the expansions. That is disappointing. They go quick and aren’t produced in surplus. If I have an issue, having only participated in the Cursed City support cycle, it’s that expansions come too closely together. It’s 2025 and we’re not quite half way through Nightwars. We didn’t have time to digest anything before more material hit the streets. Also, with Cursed City, Games Workshop broke an unwritten covenant with Warhammer Quest fans: Expansions shall come…
