I’m still not a huge 40K kind of guy. I’m drifting a bit that way, but it’s pretty slow. I think that’s why Deathwatch Overkill appeals to me. It’s a ten year old boxed game at this point. You don’t have to use a tape measure. Line of sight is never an issue and there’s no cover. So far, my inner lightweight gamer is onboard. The minis are pretty sweet too. I have a couple White Dwarf magazines with DWOK content, which also piqued my interest. So I jumped in. I was fortunate to find an unpunched (though there’s nothing to punch, only minis and cards) edition for a reasonable amount of doubloons. White Dwarf ran some expansion content that has an absolutely cracker-jack rundown at the Blasted Horizons blog. Linked on that page is also the full breakdown of the core game. So now I have more minis to…

I’m happy to say that I’ve found some time to get paint on minis! I especially like the pestigors. They’re very fun. Even the pox-wretches were fairly fun (for being chaff models). More than half way though the box set. In numbers anyway. I’m on to character models and unique hostiles. Edmark Valorant is also done but his base needs a little bit more work. Drolf Ironhead is nearly done as well. Just needs some highlights, touching up, and his base. Speaking of unique. That’s one of the things this set has going for it. Each model is (mostly) unique. Except for the mire kelpies. They’re doubled up. No biggie. Looking at these pictures, I see some things that I missed/could change. Meh, not just yet. I’m going to keep forging ahead. Don’t let perfect get in the way of done.

My guess is that it’s probably done.  I don’t expect any new heroes, villains, or adventures to come out. As always, I don’t have any insight into GW’s plans.  It’s just my feeling that the game is complete. I think a lot of people were hoping for a “big” game. That’s not to say that we could be surprised by a new big ol’ quest book, or some new cards.  But I don’t think we will. There was a lot of hype at the start.  Plenty of Warhammer Community articles about Darkwater.  But I think the major departure from a winning WHQ system burst a lot of gamer’s bubbles. Warhammer Community started reporting on WHQ: DW in October of 2025 and wrapped up in January 2026. A handful of articles were published in White Dwarf along with some new hero-characters.  But those came out back-to-back-to-back.  No new scenarios, hostiles or…

If you’re into retro wargaming and 3D printing and you’ve never heard of Doctor-Spork, you’re missing out! He has a really great selection of classic 3D printable terrain designed with FDM printers in mind. There are a number of free items as well, just in case you want to try before you buy. Did I mention buying?  The prices are BEYOND reasonable.  And by that I mean, lower than a reasonable dollar figure.  The most expensive model is well under $10. It’s not all sci-fi/40k stuff either.  There’s plenty of retro-fantasy models available as well.  Not to mention some tanks and other assorted vehicles. If you’re looking for a model that authentically looks as if it was cut and assembled from a 90’s White Dwarf magazine, look no further! Disclaimer – I’m just a fan.  I’m not affiliated with Doctor-Spork in any way.
