“Christmastime Is Here” – Charlie Brown ‘Tis the season of gift giving. You don’t have to celebrate Christmas to give presents in December. There were a few game-centric things happening in my orbit this past week. I’m over the moon to receive Warhammer Quest: Darkwater as a present. I’ve read the book and assembled the first four heroes and the Mire Kelpies. Ready to kick things off! Other game type things that were given/received were Heroquest First Light, a Gnome Blitz Bowl team with Treeman, and a complete (beginner) paint setup. Oh, did I forget to mention… NURGLINGS!!!! Pretty fun stuff. I just splurged a small amount on a ghoul judge. Surprisingly affordable compared to lots of single model sets. Give Us a Generous Game
The Ghosts of Games Past come to visit us on this cold December day. I’m writing this in the liminal time between when Darkwater has been announced, but not yet available. To me, Pre-orders are in the future. Youtubers don’t even have reviews out yet. Which seems… a bit odd. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I want Games Workshop to give us a generous game. A game that is more than just one thing. A system. A lush setting full of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. I want a GM-less RPG that satisfies! So here’s a look at generous games of the past. Blood Bowl Has The Best Minis
We play Blitz Bowl in my house, but they’re the same minis. If you’ve ever wondered what GW minis would look like if they were infused with 50% more whimsy, take a look at the entire Blood Bowl lineup. When I was a kid, I didn’t like the idea of sworn mortal enemies playing a game with each other. There should be swords and blood! But now, in my dottering old age, I appreciate the silliness. Update on my goblin Blitz Bowl team
Last year I sold six Blood Bowl goblins without realizing they’d form a whole Blitz Bowl team if I added a troll. I was pretty annoyed I didn’t do my research, but the resolution is even better. I found a group of affordable vintage replacements, and 3D printed a troll. My team is made up of six star players from the 9025 Goblin Team. Bomber Dribblesnot, Fungus the Loon (x2), Scrappa Sorehead, Nobbla Blackwart, and Goblin 2 I really like the idea of having an entire team made up of star players. I can’t wait to get these guys on the pitch. It’ll be a ton of fun!
Follow-up on mini painting priorities
Back in November I revamped my hobby priorities. No more hoarding unassembled models… So now, six months later, I have a bunch of assembled, unpainted models. Which, I actually feel better about that a bunch of stuff still in the box. I can touch and see them, even throw them into a game if I want (sure, that doesn’t happen much, unpainted minis! Eww!). Since I just finished painting everything (except for a few expansion stragglers) for Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, I don’t have any really pressing hobby demands. So here’s my updated, current priority list: Games workshop display pieces I have a number of nice GW minis that aren’t necessarily ones I’d use in a game. They are however, very cool, in my opinion. Sellers Remorse
I tend to be careful with what I buy so I don’t often sell a ton of stuff. I had bought some Blood Bowl teams to use in Blitz Bowl. Each Blitz Bowl team is essentially half a Blood Bowl team. So I sold them. I sold them without looking at Blitz Bowl 3rd edition. Bonehead move. A goblin team in 3rd Edition is 6 goblins and a troll. So all I would have needed was a cool troll model for a complete team! Ugh! So I thought it was funny that the half skaven half goblin team only came with 6 goblins. A goblin team in 2nd Edition Blitz Bowl is 8 goblins. Then I thought, maybe I’ll just collect a vintage goblin team. *Checks eBay prices* Yeah, maybe not. New priorities
I’m trying out a new hobby priority: No More Unassembled Models! My M.O. has been: I’m thinking about cutting out a lot of middle and get models ready to paint or play more quickly. I’m not sure how much value there is for me to have unassembled models that I can’t do anything with except hoard like dragon treasure. In fact, maybe that’s what I’ll call pre-usable models. Dragon Treasure. A dragon can’t spend gold, drink out of jeweled goblets, or wear filigreed armor. And I can’t play a game with models on sprue, or unbased lead. I’m a Blitz Bowl player by nature. For whatever reason, Blood Bowl never appealed to me. I’m just a smaller game kind of guy. But! I love Halloween!
