Shadows Over Hammerhal came out in 2017 and is the least well documented of any of the WHQ games. This is probably the most under-the-radar game in the WHQ family.  Board Game Geek has only a few hundred game-plays logged. The 1 vs Many version of RPG is somewhat less popular among the WHQ crowd that gravitates towards GM-less games. Internet chatter about these games really seemed to have dropped off in 2017, I was surprised to learn about the additional adversaries available in White Dwarf, that weren’t included in the card sets, and don’t seem to really exist online either.  I’ll try to track them down if I can. The expansions are largely compatible with Silver Tower, though the scenarios are Hammerhal specific.  There are no Hammerhal specific expansion boxes, books, or minis. Only White Dwarf content. I’ve included all the White Dwarf magazines because the heroes and monsters…

Silver Tower came out in 2016 and offers several interesting expansions. The rebirth of Warhammer Quest in the Age of Sigmar universe. We’ve played some Silver Tower and have really enjoyed it. There’s a large variety of heroes and monsters to add into the game and shares basic mechanics with all of its successors. I’ve included all the White Dwarf magazines that were released for Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal since the heroes and monsters overlap. Back in November I revamped my hobby priorities. No more hoarding unassembled models… So now, six months later, I have a bunch of assembled, unpainted models. Which, I actually feel better about that a bunch of stuff still in the box. I can touch and see them, even throw them into a game if I want (sure, that doesn’t happen much, unpainted minis! Eww!). Since I just finished painting everything (except for a few expansion stragglers) for Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, I don’t have any really pressing hobby demands. So here’s my updated, current priority list: Games workshop display pieces I have a number of nice GW minis that aren’t necessarily ones I’d use in a game. They are however, very cool, in my opinion. These are the minis I’d be sad if I never painted, even if they’re not particularly “useful”. Gotrek, Felix, Grombrindal, and Jakkob Bugmansson XI. Double…

I’d like to revisit a topic I talked about a couple weeks ago. Modern Games Workshop models. This is a controversial topic because people are passionate about both old and new. It’s really great that people have found things they genuinely enjoy, and I do not meant to diminish anyone’s interest in anything. This is a longer article than I usual write, so if you want to skip right to the uncanny valley section, it starts in section 3. I’ve been trying to psychoanalyze myself as to what drives my personal preference in miniatures. Opinions and biases are 100% subjective. I am in no way saying something is right or wrong. I’m going to be talking about my own personal preference. I’m sure this won’t ingratiate me with anyone. To break it down, I’d say there are 3 factors driving my preference toward older miniatures. All of those are real…

A google search on John Blanche’s Knight Panther painting brought me back to Between the Bolter and Me. Love the freehand. So great!

I wanted to paint a Slambo in a low stakes way. I’m going to work up to painting one of the originals. He’s resin printed and turned out pretty darn well for probably an hour and a half’s worth of work. Sure, he’s just a mirrored Heroquest Chaos Warrior, but I think he looks good! He’s going to go on the Hero shelf, not down with the rest of the Chaos horde. I think he’ll be a Chaos Warrior character for my Warhammer Quest set. Big thanks go out to Soundwave810 for the design!

Here’s the Slambo family photo. Well, of most of them. I have one of the finecast versions as well. Though that one needs a bit of work. It’s my first finecast and I have to say that it will probably be my last. No explanation needed. These are from left to right: Dual Wielding Chaos Warrior by Soundwave810 Two legit real Chaos Warriors (Slambo Original) by GW Heroquest Chaos Warrior with Double Axe by Rockgnome I have to say, that Rockgnome’s Slambo is VERY true to the original. Great axe angle, armor and everything.

Check out this AMAZING Slambo by Adam Wier at Between the Bolter and Me. So awesome. Those horns are freehand! No texture on them. Love it! Just a leathery old Chaos Warrior, down in the depths of a dungeon.
