Cursed City Expansions
The Cursed City core box came out in 2021, and I’m not going to say any more about that. Welcome back to October! My favorite month! Cooler temperatures, spooky movies, Halloween, autumn ales, and of course… Cursed City! It was followed by a number of expansions and additions. It can be tough to keep up with everything that is released after a game hits the market, especially when a list is started while content is still coming out. The internet is littered with incomplete contemporary Warhammer Quest lists. The good news is that nothing new will ever come out for Cursed City. That’s sarcasm. It’s horrible. This is the first year since 2015 that there hasn’t been new Warhammer Quest content. Sad! This is the first edition of WHQ that I’ve acquired at the initial release. I didn’t buy 1995 because it was expensive, I was still feeling the disappointment…
Gargoylian Follow-Up
A few weeks ago I wrote about the Gargoylian in Cursed City. Since then, I’m still thinking about gargoylians. Specifically, do I need to acquire more gargoylian models? The first step is, what sets come with these adorably blood-thirsty magical creatures? Quick note: The Cities of Sigmar Army box and Spearhead box both recycle the Cavaliers, so there are no unique gargoylians to be had there. I’ve identified five sets that come with gargoylians, with eleven total models: Freeguild Cavaliers Now, most people will tell you that this set comes with one gargoylian. I believe it comes with two. Look at that weird bird thing! Have you ever seen a bird with a chin?! GARGOYLIAN! Tahlia Vedra Lioness-of-the Parch This is a big hero model but Warhammer.com pictures don’t have a good shot of the gargoylian, so here’s a painted up version over at CAM2D at Tumblr. Freeguild Command Corps…
The Gargoylian in Cursed City
If you’re like me, and only tangentially associated with Age of Sigmar lore, you might have also been wondering: Well, they seem to be magical creatures of varying size and form that inhabit the same Mortal Realms. This is the only reference to gargoylians on Warhammer Community: https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/kI158RMr/cities-of-sigmar-who-or-what-exactly-are-gargoylians/ I don’t have many/any proper AoS books myself, so I can’t contribute too much more information. They don’t make an appearance in the Soulbound Ulfenkarn City at the Edge of Death book. But I can talk about White Dwarf 496. One of the oddities of the Cities of Sigmar heroes is the addition of the gargoylian companion. It’s listed as an Empowerment, but with no other text, other than what is on the card. A gargoylian companion essentially provides a short-ranged attack at the cost of a 4+ die. There is a 50/50 chance of causing 0, 2 or 4 damage to…
White Dwarf 496 – The Cities of Sigmar Cursed City Heroes
These characters are a fun refresh for Cursed City. They come from three different sets: Freeguild Marshal and Relic Envoy, Alchemite Warforger, and Freeguild Command Corps. In addition to the 3 things below, I find the subtitles on the cards interesting. The original heroes in the box also include vocations (Soldier, Priest, Death Scholar, etc.), and we get a few new ones on these cards. There is no current game mechanic (that I know of) that relies on you being a Whisperblade vs a War Surgeon. Is that trait intended to be a portion of some larger/additional aspect of gameplay? I feel like GW could release a book (similar to WHQ 1995 Role Play) that could VASTLY expand roleplay, no additional components necessary, it’s a great box. Now, there’s nothing to stop us from doing that ourselves, but (zombie voice:) we must obey the marketing! And GW generally does a…
