These characters are a fun refresh for Cursed City.
They come from three different sets:
Freeguild Marshal and Relic Envoy, Alchemite Warforger, and Freeguild Command Corps.
In addition to the 3 things below, I find the subtitles on the cards interesting. The original heroes in the box also include vocations (Soldier, Priest, Death Scholar, etc.), and we get a few new ones on these cards. There is no current game mechanic (that I know of) that relies on you being a Whisperblade vs a War Surgeon. Is that trait intended to be a portion of some larger/additional aspect of gameplay? I feel like GW could release a book (similar to WHQ 1995 Role Play) that could VASTLY expand roleplay, no additional components necessary, it’s a great box. Now, there’s nothing to stop us from doing that ourselves, but (zombie voice:) we must obey the marketing! And GW generally does a pretty good job of it.
Originally I was going to proxy these, I even 3D printed some. But I just couldn’t do it. I like real GW models for the playable characters. Again, the marketing at work.
Always Board Never Boring has a great video.
Three oddities:
- Kylger Skalderbrin – Transmutation of Lead (4+) –> “Pick a visible hostile and roll a dice. If the roll is successful, that hostile’s weapons roll a single bone dice until the end of the round.” It doesn’t say which dice to roll for success/failure. Assuming bone as well, though that’s a guaranteed fail with my dice.
- Grimstandt Arnhect – Path To Glory –> “Each time this fighter suffers damage from the weapon they were picked as the target after using the Make Way! ability, gain 1 inspiration point.” I imagine that is supposed to read: “Each time this fighter suffers damage from the hostile they picked…”
- Gargoylian Companion – Attack Range –> “allocate 2 damage points to a hostile within 1 space of the Gargoylian companion model.” It doesn’t say “adjacent”, it says 1 space. What’s the consensus on that? Does that mean the Gargoylian can lash out at hostiles that are essentially 2 spaces away, or should we read that as adjacent?
Individual Character Rundown

Bryndtr Vossheim (Human, Soldier, Blade)
This character was a bit of a letdown. I really liked the concept of a relic bearer, but his abilities are all worse than Andren Landholde.

Gerhardt DuSaine (Human, Soldier, Stalwart)
This character has leadership qualities written all over him. He is a fighter that also provides support. His “successful” attack is only 1, so hope you can roll some criticals.

Kylger Skalderbrin (Human, Wizard, Loremaster)
The first “Wizard” in the game. He’s an interesting mix of brawn and brains. He can buff himself and his companions. Pretty fun.

Andren Landholde (Human, Soldier, Stalwart)
Surprisingly good. Sturdy, with useful abilities.

Becknerr and Clarius (Human, Soul Sheperd, Loremaster)
Definitely worth bringing. Becknerr can inspire companions quickly.

Becknerr and Clarius (Human, Soul Sheperd, Loremaster) Alternate head, I magnetized them.

Gaunt Sawl (Human, Whisperblade, Executioner)
Absolutely deadly, and pretty darn fragile. Be sure to run behind the stalwarts if any hostiles remain.

Grimstandt Arnhect (Human, Soldier, Stalwart)
Big and beefy. I don’t see his special abilities being too useful, but maybe he can shield the executioners.

War Surgeon Vynder (Human, War Surgeon, Blade)
I think it’s hilarious that this character can administer “first aid” to other heroes against their will. There’s only a small chance he’ll inflict more damage!

Gargoylian Companion
Not sure about this little critter, how is this supposed to work?
