Gotrek & Felix

Gotrek & Felix

March 25, 2024 was the day that I brainstormed a TON of blog topics. Those ideas are winding down.

Note: Mild Gotrek and Felix spoilers ahead!

I first became aware of Gotrek & Felix in 1992 or 1993 through White Dwarf magazine.

I was already an old gate-keeping gamer at heart and I distinctly remember not liking named-characters in the universe. For some reason that rubbed me the wrong way and I wanted purity in unnamed denizens living, scraping, and dying in a merciless old world.

Not sure why I was like that. But something piqued my interest in them a decade later when I used some birthday money to buy the G&F first omnibus in 2005. What spurred me to do that? No clue. I’d been out chasing cars and girls for years by then. I was living in a new city and maybe I was just looking for a bit of home comfort.

I was hooked.

Then came the second omnibus. Then individual novels. Until it all came crashing down with Slayer. Total heartbreak.  Also, don’t read City of the Damned unless you’re a total completionist. Zombieslayer is probably one of my favorite. Don’t sleep on the Ulrika Bloodborn trilogy either, they’re pretty solid too.

The Age of Sigmar novels are pretty decent. Maleneth was a good companion. That storyline really could have gone on longer. Verminslayer was… suboptimal.

All the minis are pretty great. Nothing suboptimal there. I have most of them. Not all, sadly.

One of the best G&F resources is https://completegotrekandfelix.info/

That’s probably the best catalog there is. I’m not even going to try to list all the books, minis, and appearances they’ve made. That list includes HeroQuest, Advanced HeroQuest, Talisman, Cursed City (Gotrek only), and many, many more.

Personally, I have to say that I prefer the boisterous, energetic Gotrek over silent, brooding, depressed Gotrek. And another thing; when will Felix ever gain a scrap of self-confidence in a fight? That man is a warrior poet!

I’d love to get new novels shoehorned into the old world, or have some time-bubble burst and have Felix tumble into the Age of Sigmar. Gotrek misses him so much. Just as much as I do.
