Is it the beautiful hex tiles?
Is it the exotic space bazaar narrative?
Is it the brilliant miniatures?
Is it the intriguing characters?
Is it the imaginative gameplay?
Is it the vast unknown of the Blackstone itself?
Or is it all of the above?
I say it’s all of the above. The game has it all. Total package. But with all that going for it, it’s still not for everyone.
It’s too boardgamey for hard core gamers
It’s too RPGey for casual game players
It’s not Warhammerey enough for Warhammer players.
But it’s just enough for me, my friends and family.
You roll fun dice. Explore exotic locations. Slay interesting monsters. What’s not to like?

If I have one criticism, it’s the layer of abstraction laid over trading on Precipice. I think it’s there to avoid “gaming” the trading system. But I find it cumbersome, we leave it out.
If I have one more criticism, it’s that setting the boards up can be laborious. Especially when you have three other participants waiting to play. The best solution to this that I’ve found is to lay the combat card down on the table and have everyone pitch in and try to find the right board sections. It’s not a great system, but at least gets people involved. I do the same thing with Cursed City if I find myself in the same situation.

But other than that, wow, what a fun game. Great loot. Unlockable foes and ratcheting gameplay using the legacy deck. In some ways, I enjoy the shortened timeline of the game. Your character doesn’t level up, per se. They’re in a hurry, they’re scavenging. They’re not spending years in the Blackstone (not by choice, anyway!). They’re already battle-hardened warriors, who will do anything to survive. The weak perished long before reaching Precipice.
I recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a fun space odyssey. It’s readily available to buy new directly from GW, online and brick and mortar retailers, as well as individual sellers. A lot of people seem to have acquired the game without ever taking it from a spin, which is unfortunate. So if you have a copy laying around, get those minis together! This game won’t play itself!
