It’s the 21st century, why are we still playing in dungeons?
The age old question: why are there so many fully stocked treasure chests in the labyrinthine corridors? What is it about a romanticized semi-medieval setting that fires up the imagination? There have been plenty of medieval revivals over the years. The Wikipedia page on Medievalism is quite interesting. It ranges from what is now classic literature, to Danny Kaye in The Court Jester, to contemporary Renaissance Fairs and Larping. I think it’s because the fear of darkness, the unknown of rounding corners, mysticism of magic, and a general love of swords. Lots of kids go through a fear of the dark, it’s primal. We can’t see in the dark. There’s monsters there! We can’t see around corners either. There could be treasure! Also, there’s monsters there! Magic, fairies, wizards, and enchanted objects. That stuff goes back a loooooong ways. Just check out the Clan MacLeod fairy flag. Swords. So much of…
Who doesn’t enjoy a good April Fool’s Day joke?
Well, most people. Most people don’t enjoy April Fool’s Day. But I think this one is pretty decent. Happy April everyone!
Here’s another wonderful blog, set adrift on the sea. Finding Warhammer Questers like a message in a bottle.
I hope all is well with Rusty, but a lot has happened since May 2020. https://rusty-warriors.blogspot.com
There’s a new Old World Roleplaying game coming out, but it’s not Warhammer Quest
I’m up on most Games Workshop roleplay news, but I missed this one. GW announced on Warhammer Community the “imminent release” of Warhammer The Old World Roleplaying Game. Here’s a big write up from warhammer.com: https://www.wargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-rpg/exclusive Now what does this mean for a potentially new Warhammer Quest game? Who knows!?! Warhammer Quest and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game existed in parallel for one glorious year; 1995 (and I suppose lots of other years with Sliver Tower, Shadows Over Hammerhal, Blackstone Fortress, and Cursed City). But I’d say that sadly, this probably decreases the odds of a new Old World TTRPG. Cursed City is still an active, and if a 30th anniversary ’95 came out, it would complete directly with Cursed City, Soulbound, and the newly announced Cubicle 7 game.
Underappreciated YouTube channels

Gorechosen Schemes
I’ve been on a bit of a Gorechosen/Combat Arena kick lately, and just started painting the models. Here are some great paint schemes. I need to pick a basing scheme too. I don’t plan to go all-out like some of these painters, they’ve outdone themselves! The Khorne models are a bit “samey”, but these painters have done a great job of differentiating the minis. I especially like the blue Skulltaker by Next Level Painting. It’s a little funny that even some of the newest things in my collection are a bit old now.
Fun write-up about Advanced Heroquest
The author’s experience is starkly different than mine as a young person with a copy of AHQ in hand. https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/pauls-most-important-gaming-memory/ I’m glad someone enjoyed their experience with AHQ, because my experience was a letdown after the wonders of HeroQuest. My brother and I were ready to take on AHQ after playing dozens of rounds of HeroQuest. But the box contents were… underwhelming. Warhammer Quest 1995 remedied that situation, though at an out-of-reach price tag. So! As an adult I figured I’d give AHQ another try. And, it was pretty much the game I remember. Lots of emptiness ending in abrupt death. In stark contrast to HeroQuest, where you’re slaying monsters all day, if you run into a monster in Advanced HeroQuest, they will quickly and quietly stab you to death in the darkness of a long forgotten hallway. Your character will spend their last moments counting how many arrows remain…
Sellers Remorse
I tend to be careful with what I buy so I don’t often sell a ton of stuff. I had bought some Blood Bowl teams to use in Blitz Bowl. Each Blitz Bowl team is essentially half a Blood Bowl team. So I sold them. I sold them without looking at Blitz Bowl 3rd edition. Bonehead move. A goblin team in 3rd Edition is 6 goblins and a troll. So all I would have needed was a cool troll model for a complete team! Ugh! So I thought it was funny that the half skaven half goblin team only came with 6 goblins. A goblin team in 2nd Edition Blitz Bowl is 8 goblins. Then I thought, maybe I’ll just collect a vintage goblin team. *Checks eBay prices* Yeah, maybe not. I don’t want to spend $15 per gobo for a team I might play once or twice. I’ll probably…
Blackstone Fortress Additional GW Models
This is the single greatest reddit comment ever and I’m saving this post for posterity. Minis beyond the box expansions… byu/forlorn_bandersnatch inBlackstonefortress It looks like you’ve listed all of the ones that I know about. There are 3 army-of-one characters: deathwatch watch master, eversor assassin, and solitaire 5 retinue characters: Jokaero weaponsmith, (2) Broggan brothers, Skarburn zapdakka, and Penitent 707 2 new enemy types: master of possession, greater possessed The models that GW used for each of the ‘Extra’ characters: The Jokaero weaponsmith, Deathwatch watch master, eversor assassin, and Solitaire are all as-is models from their own stand alone kits for 40k. Penitent 707 is one of the three Arco-flagellants from the Sisters of Battle limited edition box set, which are different from the models in the stand alone Arco-flagellant box set. That being said, any Arco-flagellant model should do – it’s not like any of them have a number…
I wish October was two months long
I printed out this skeleton months ago. It’s from Old Realm Forge. Since he has little legs, I added a tombstone (semi-failed round-base print) to help back him up. Knocked out the paint job in an hour. Super fun. I love painting skeletons in October! I also assembled a Shambling Undead team for Blitz Bowl that I acquired… 2.5 years ago. Gulp. Time flies. Do you have any model kits that you’re sitting on for a long time/special occasion?
