What’s Up With 11th Edition?

The Internet is abuzz with interest in the latest edition of Warhammer 40k.

I’d say the buzz is mostly positive.  It’s not a full reboot, so that’s good.  But there’s definitely a solid group of… I’ll say mature gamers that seem slightly sour about it.

I don’t blame them.  It’s more GW churn.  They have to keep selling books and models.

But it’s also a benchmark on the progression of time.  Sure, sure, GW used to be less corporate.  Yes, there was more whimsy in prior editions. Yes, it was more magical to you when you were a kid.

It’s a tough realization that it’s magical to someone now, when looking at it through wizend eyes, it doesn’t look especially magical.  But you liked it when you discovered it because that’s the way it was then.  Same thing now.  This is the way it is now, and people are just discovering 40k.  It’s magical to them.

And the new launch box doesn’t have to be for you.  Marines vs Orks is classic.  But, if you’re old, this might not be for you, and that’s OK.  It doesn’t have to be.  You don’t have to get it.  You don’t have to give GW your money for this, even if you’re pining to recapture that feeling of youth, experienced as a youth.

It’s also OK to WANT to want it.  The pang of a lost love.

Just don’t let it get you down.  Time feels like it’s accelerating, and it may very well be.  My advice is to cherish your antiques.  Seize the day. Find a friend and play 2nd or 3rd edition 40k.  Make it a priority.  Start small and it’ll be fun.  You just might feel like a twelve-year-old again.
