Give Us a Generous Game
The Ghosts of Games Past come to visit us on this cold December day. I’m writing this in the liminal time between when Darkwater has been announced, but not yet available. To me, Pre-orders are in the future. Youtubers don’t even have reviews out yet. Which seems… a bit odd. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I want Games Workshop to give us a generous game. A game that is more than just one thing. A system. A lush setting full of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. I want a GM-less RPG that satisfies! So here’s a look at generous games of the past. Space Marine (Epic) Three armies. Terrain. Markers. Counters. Rules. Reference Sheets. So Good. Man O’ War Fleets! Counters! Great art! Cards! Warhammer Quest Day (2025)
Today is Warhammer Quest Day, in a way. Pre-orders for Warhammer Quest: Darkwater go live today at 1:00 pm EST. I’m looking forward to the game system that I care most about getting some coverage. I, and the whole world, expect the game to sell well. Despite a price tag that rivals an eBay copy of Warhammer Quest 1995. I’m hoping for a good, fun game, despite some obvious cutbacks. The board-book is unproven (for WHQ), the new character and activation system looks “a bit clockwork” as a youtuber described it. Removing unnecessary grind from the game is a good thing. Cursed City was bloated with grind out of the box. Luckily that is easy to skirt, just play the missions that you want, based on your level. We’ll see. Fingers crossed. Word on the street is that there are no special incentives to pre-order. No limited edition foil character…
Did Tariffs Kill Games Workshop Bookshelf Games?
This is speculation, but I’m guessing that tariffs and other economic chicanery killed GW bookshelf games this year. 2025 has been slim pickings at B&N. We’ve definitely had more the last few years than this year. Dawn of War: Onslaught came out this year, but that’s it. By my count, at least 14 games 2019-2024. Only one in 2025. So here’s a summary of some of the most interesting boxed (bookshelf) games released by Games Workshop. I’m not even counting “mainline” games like Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, or Underworlds starter sets. Combat Arena In previous years, we had three versions of Combat Arena: Warhammer Quest: Lost Relics This is a bookshelf stand-alone Warhammer Quest game. There’s been another hero reveal for Darkwater. I dig it. It’s a very “barbarian” pose. That is quite a sword. Similar to Qulathis the Exile, this hero stole her weapon. Why are only the ladies stealing weapons? Interesting backstory. GW says we’ll get another reveal nest week. In other news, I didn’t buy anything on Warhammer Day. The ammo pouch was cool, but I’m not dropping $200 on anything that doesn’t have a direct WHQ tie-in.
White Dwarf
Just because this is short, doesn’t mean that it’s low effort! I went through all of my White Dwarf magazines (old and new!) and took note of everything I found interesting. There’s so much content published, I’m going to start losing track of which issue is what. It’s now available above, in the “Blog” menu. I’ll to my best to keep it updated, but, sometimes it’s tough to keep up on everything. So no promises.

More Darkwater News
I’m late with updates because I can only do hobby stuff on nights and weekends, but here’s the latest leaks! What happened in the last couple days? A blurry pre-release photo leaked out: So GW tried to get ahead of the story with a post on Warhammer-Community. They put a good spin on it and offered to reveal more into about a single character based on a poll. These are the choices: I voted for the dwarf, but the knight won. I don’t mind, he’s pretty cool. But I think the biggest news (division) is the board pictured above. It looks like a map-book. My knee jerk reaction was that I didn’t like it. It looks very unimpressive. There’s hardly any components pictured. What precisely are we getting for what I can only guess will be $250 US. With a map-book, that means that there’s no more exploration aspect to…
What’s on the Table?!
Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress We beat The Hidden Vault! Some Guardsmen were vaporized several times and we didn’t take too much damage. BSF was a lot of fun, I think it took us years to actually beat the whole box… I just checked, August 2023 is the first photo I have of Blackstone Fortress on the table. I finished painting the set in November of that year. So a little over two years of playing. We’ve now finished the core boxes to Cursed City and Blackstone Fortress. We’ve probably played all the adventures out of the ’95 Questbook, though Warhammer Quest ’95 never truly ends! So what’s next? Not sure. Maybe Darkwater? I’d like to play more Cursed City. There’s some ’95 Quest adventures I’d like to get to as well. Also Silver Tower. Too many good options!!
